God’s Big Creatures
No one wants to travel in the dark in Uganda, but tonight unexpected road mishaps and a rapid equatorial sunset combine to create an undesired outcome. Six p.m. and the sky told me we wouldn't be able to hold the sun back from slipping over the edge of the earth. Hours of travel lay ahead of us to Katwe fishing village, the site of our first conference. On the deserted road that runs alongside the lake, I thought of God's words in Genesis. God said let the waters be alive with a swarm of living creatures. Uganda lakes roil with herds of hippos, while God's stars shimmer in His sky above. A heavy fog sets in and we creep along. Augustine's been behind the wheel for too many hours. A shout from the back seat, an animal is spotted in the bush. We pass safely, without delay. I am keenly aware God has created beings that cannot normally be seen by humans, and sense those great creatures accompanying us on the road.
